The Sustainable Energy Center was well attended during the 2009 Oregon State Fair. The Oregon Department of Energy provided the latest program and tax credit information along with the latest in high-performance energy efficient home construction. There were displays featuring two of the most popular renewable energy options: wind and solar. WindEnergy provided a 30ft wind turbine and Solar World in conjunction with Sun Storage provided a display featuring a solar paneled covered structure.
There was something for everyone. Fair patrons also got an opportunity learn about various low carbon transportation options. Oregon Green Schools provided a full day of fun activities featuring hands-on recycling and composting projects for kids.

Oregon State Fair partners with Garten's Zero Waste Events
Striving towards Zero Waste
In 2009, the Oregon State Fair has partnered with Garten Zero Waste Events in conjunction with Allied Waste to reduce and recycle the waste generated during the fair... helping move us further along the continuum toward more efficient waste reduction.
With the professional assistance of Garten's Zero Waste team, 2009 Oregon State Fair patrons will experience multiple points of access throughout the fairgrounds for easy deposit of discarded service ware, beverage containers, paper goods and food remainders. Garten’s Zero Waste workers will sort and redirect this waste on site.
WHY THIS MOVE TOWARD ZERO WASTE?
WE HELP TO MINIMIZE OUR WASTE STREAM. The new partnership between the Oregon State Fair and Garten Zero Waste Events will reduce the flow of trash to limited local disposal sites before, during, and after fair. These efforts represent our strong commitment in taking steps toward measurably reducing, recycling and composting generated waste.
WE SUPPORT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. Our decision to minimize our ecological footprint concurrently creates jobs for people with disabilities right here in our community. Since 1970, Garten Services has provided jobs for people with disabilities. Through the years, the Oregon State Fair and Garten Services have partnered on a variety of projects. Our partnership successfully balances important economic, environmental and human equity considerations.
WE HELP THE COMMUNITY SEE THINGS A NEW WAY. "Zero Waste" is a new way of looking at our waste stream. Rather than seeing used materials as garbage merely in need of disposal, "Zero Waste" views discarded items as valuable resources… capturing raw materials that can now be repurposed into new products. “Zero Waste” also represents financial opportunity and personal independence for people with disabilities. In the process, our zero waste effort offers Oregon State Fair attendees a personal experience with alternatives to traditional waste disposal.
WE DEMONSTRATE OUR DEDICATION TO THE ENVIRONMENT. The Oregon State Fair is committed to sustaining the environment as well as our community. We are focused on a tangible demonstration of that commitment by employing Garten Zero Waste Events to help manage our solid waste in new and innovative ways. Together with Garten, we will make a positive environmental impact.
Our main sorting station will be located South of the Historic Horse Show Stadium. Stop by and see how we all can make a difference.
