Artisan's Village
Artists and craftspeople from all over Oregon are returning to the Oregon State Fair from August 28th through September 7th to teach, demonstrate and show off their skills. The Artisan's Village and Village Stage are located in the courtyard near the Floral Garden and will be active all day, every day of Fair.
2009 Artisan's Village Hours 10 am to 9 pm Friday – Saturday and 11 am to 8 pm Sunday – Thursday all 11 days of the fair!
2009 Participating Artists
Pottery & Raku Ceramics, sponsored by the Willamette Art Center, not only do they host the Artisan’s Village, they also host their own exhibit. Choose a handmade ceramic, glaze it, and the fine volunteers from WAC will fire it on the spot in a Raku kiln. In an hour, you can come back and pick up your own creation!
Elizabeth Jewelry – Uniquely handcrafted sterling beaded jewelry
Lavender Thyme Herb Farm, featuring Taffy Donaldson – A booth of wonderful scents, including farm-dried lavender bouquets, linen mists and lavender oil.
Berg Artworks, featuring Sharon Nyberg – Nyberg uses a lampworking torch to melt glass strips or rods to make glass beads. If you’re a lover, you’ll want to pull up a chair and watch – and you’ll go crazy over her detailed, dichroic creations.
Cool Shoes & The Moccasin Co., featuring David and Penny Peek – Hand-made footwear “from the ground up.” Watch David Peek tool the leather and create shoes sized just right, on the spot.
Carvings by Dave, featuring Dave Disselbrett – Whittle away the warm afternoon with Disselbrett and his gallery of marvelous animals and characters, all hand-carved and painted.
Capitol Woodcarvers – Members of the Capitol Woodcarvers guild – the same folks who helped the beloved Salem Riverfront Carousel – will demonstrate all aspects of the time-honored art of woodcarving.
Glassblowing Local 503, from the Gorge Glashaus – This booth is hot! Watch in amazement as molten glass takes shape right before your eyes.
KK Creations – featuring Wes Kesten and Gretchen Kirk – Watch Kesten take a “boring old rock” and reveal the incredible beauty within, as he carves and polishes geodes, Oregon Sunstones and more.
Art in Oils, featuring Markus Willis – Come see why Willis has the longest running booth in the Artisan’s Village. His oil paintings are rich and unique – many of them are painted on tiny canvases that are assembled into a final montage. As always, he will be painting in the booth throughout the Fair. Come learn some tips from a master.
The Dramatic Arts, hosted by Salem’s Pentacle Theatre – This booth will present all details of dramatic arts, including costuming, stage decoration, acting and directing – everything it takes to make the show go on.
Blacksmith, featuring Nick Marcejlas of Red Troll Forge & Eric Grip of Iron Grip Forge – Watch Marcejlas & Grip make incredible tools, household items and jewelry out of red hot-iron.
Chainsaw Carving, featuring the Whited Brother – who runs this family, anyway? Watch the Whited Brothers rip it up with their chainsaws, creating art as big as a tree or tiny enough for your desk.
Pyrofuse, featuring Robert Fox – Not only do they create beautiful glass heart pendants, but wonderful beads used for necklaces.
Connie Veenker – Demonstrations of creating unique fabric collages with beading, painting, and distressing. Her artwork explores the abstraction and color of everyday things.
Aurora Colony Handspinner’s Guild – Come see spinners, knitters, weavers and fiber artist at their best as the demonstrate their talents using sheep wool, llama and cashmere goat fiber, as well as protein fibers found everyday.
Flowers by Friends – Flower presses, pressed flower cards, and more. Stop by and learn how to make your own pressed flower cards, bookmarks, and stickers. Plus, bead weaving and tye dye clothing.
Jenny Armitage – A joy and passion for the arts through polymer clay sculptures and watercolor paintings.
