USO Dance
Relax, Retreat, Remember at the Oregon State Fair's USO Dance on Aug. 29th 2009 from 5:00pm - 7:30pm on the rooftop of the Americraft Center. Hosted by longtime Portland radio personality, Roger Hart and playing music from the 40's & 50's big band sounds to pop. Come and dance to the music that got everyone through World War II.

Veteran's USO Style Show
August 29, Saturday, 1:30 pm on Center Stage
Tribute to Veterans
This special show is a recreated USO-Style show with music and comedy acts, designed to entertain and pay tribute to all who have served our country in the United States military. There will be performances by Richard Probasco, The Dennis Mitchell Band with The Kingsmen, The Brown Sisters, Two Sisters & a Mister, Ken & Malinda Buckles, Barrie Malcolm & Bill Haugen, and more.
After the entertainers have finished their acts, Ken Buckles will call up all the Veterans in attendance from each war/conflict so that the audience may recognize them for their service and sacrifice. The State of Honor Guard will post Colors during the USO Style Show.This event is hosted by Remembering America's Heroes, a non-profit organization based in Milwaukie, Oregon.
Veteran's and Active Military Parade
Saturday, August 29 Active Military and Veteran's Parade and Flyover
12:15 pm -- F-15 flyover, followed by cannon salute will start off the parade. The parade will begin at the Military Vehicle display, located north of the 4-H Auditorium. Military vehicles, marching units, and the Color Guard will join in the parade.
Among the military personnel participating in the parade are the JFHQ, 41 IBCT (Rear), CDR 82 BDE, 102 CST, Counter Drug, 142 FW, RRC, Oregon Territorial Express Stagecoach, Northwest Cavalry Association, Northwest Civil War Council, Union and Confederate Cavalry, Union and Confederate Artillery, Union and Confederate Infantry, Civilian Alliance, Traveling Townsfolk, and Stagecoach Drivers and Swampers.
The military vehicles joining the parade include the 1942 M2A1 Stuart Light Tank, 1943 M5A1 Stuart Tank, 1965 M114 Armored Command, 1951 M75 APC, and 1944 M8 Armored Car.

Life-Size Memorial Marine Wood Sculpting - See it live!

Chris Foltz (Professional Wood Sculptor) will be sculpting two life-size Marine soldiers that will ultimately rest at the David Dewitt Veterans Memorial site in Coos Bay, Oregon. Chris has chosen to sculpt these statues during the Veterans Appreciation Days at the Oregon State Fair. You’ll also have an opportunity to talk to the artist in action. Here is your chance to see wood transform into a priceless memorial that will be on display for years to come… it’s too big to miss!

Veterans' Appreciation Days, August 28-29
The Oregon State Fair will honor Veterans during the first 2 days of the Fair, August 28 & 29, 2009. Veterans will be admitted into the Fair free of charge with a voucher available in Vets News. This newsletter is available from the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs.

Traditional Veteran displays will be in the Jackman-Long Building throughout the duration of the Fair. In addition the Oregon State Fair will provide special activities during opening weekend including a military vehicle display down the main concourse, a parade through the grounds beginning at noon on Saturday August 29th and a USO Style Show beginning at 1pm on the Comcast Center Stage.
Tribute to Veterans
Including a Recreated Bob Hope 60s USO Show - Performers scheduled to appear are Oregon's own The Brown Sisters, The Two Sisters Trio, Pastor Richard Probasco, Dennis Marcellino of The Tokens and Sly & The Family Stone, and The Dennis Mitchell Band with The Kingsmen (of *Louie, Louie* fame). At the end of the performances, there will be recognition of all Veterans in the audience. This is an emotional experience not to be missed. The show starts at 1:30 p.m. at the Comcast Stage. This event is sponsored by Spirit Mountain Casino and the Oregon State Fair, and hosted by Remembering America's Heroes, a non-profit organization based in Milwaukie, Oregon.
Parade
The 3rd annual Veterans Appreciation Parade will be open to all military organizations via a (NEW) application process. An application for participation will be required and an official approval letter from the Oregon State Fair management to participate in the parade. Veterans will be invited to walk in the parade, which is approximately 1/2 mile in length. The parade will begin at 12:15 p.m. Applications will be available in April in 2009 and must be submitted to the Oregon State Fair by May 15, 2009.
