Internships and Employment Opportunities

June 15 – September 15, 2010 Oregon Parks & Recreation Department - Oregon State Fair & Exposition Center Division

Internship opportunities are currently available for the 2010 Oregon State Fair in the Sports and Recreation and Marketing Departments.

Sports and Recreation Intern: Hourly wage, no benefits

Position Description: Assist the Sports and Recreation Programs Manager in the planning and executing of all aspects in this large venue.  This position will allow the selected applicant to interact with individuals who are passionate about their sport as well as allow the applicant to learn about many of the activities available within Oregon and their corresponding organizations.  This position will encompass genuine hard work, creativity and fun!

Job Duties Include: Communication with volunteers, state employees, sponsors, vendors, organizations and the public.  Assist with the set up, coordination and facilitation of the Sports and Recreation venue.  Assist in the development of new ideas, programs and venues.  Some solicitation for sponsorship to may be required.

Hours: June 15 - Septembe 15, 2010, full-time approximately 35 - 40 hours per week.  Over time may be required from August 27 - September 6, 2010.

Qualifications: Currently enrolled college student or recent college graduate with some focus on physical education, recreation, sports marketing, business or health.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.  A valid drivers license and criminal history check are required.

Sponsorship, Marketing and Promotions Intern: Hourly wage, no benefits

Position Description: Assist the Oregon State Fair Manager and the Marketing team with the planning and execution of promotional events, sponsorships and activities, pre-fair and during the annual Oregon State Fair.

Job Duties Include: Assist with creating, coordinating and implementing promotional and sponsorship events, activities and programs.  Implement promotional give a ways, conduct on-site contests, assist with off and on-site pre-fair promotional activities and assist with on-site radio station sponsorships.  Assist in the creation of marketing materials such as flyers, posters, signs and other promotional pieces.  Assist with the distribution of media kits, update and maintain media mailing and e-mails lists, record news clippings and assist in maintaining and updating website information.

Temporary Employment

Due to the overwhelming number of applications received, we are no longer accepting applications for the 2009 Oregon State Fair. However, hiring for Carnival and Food Concessions will begin on Monday, August 17, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in the Employment Trailer located in the Oak Grove on 17th Street near Silverton Road. In addition, Bud Elgin Concessions is conducting interviews weekly, on grounds, at the Red Barn (site 323) – schedule available in the front office of the Americraft Center (also known as the Jackman-Long Bldg). Thank you for your interest and support – we look forward to seeing you at the Oregon State Fair!

 

Volunteer Opportunities

2009 Applications now Available!

Where do you find the most talented, professional, courteous and friendly volunteers - at the Oregon State Fair!  Come join the 150th Birthday fun! There are many areas in which we can use your expertise to make this an outstanding event. From staffing fair departments (Farm and Garden, Home Arts & Hobbies, Art, Photography) to customer service and hospitality and assisting with competitions. Volunteers receive a T-Shirt and one free admission ticket for every 8 hours of volunteer service they provide. So come be a part of the fun this year - you'll be sure to make new friends, create memories, while at the same time welcoming over 365,000 guests to an experience they won't soon forget!

Policies & Procedures

As a volunteer staff member, your role is very inportant to the Oregon state Fair.  You will serve as a goodwill ambassador for the Fair and directly influence how the Fair is perceived by the public.  The following policies have been designaed to provide a smooth operating Fair to allow you to do the best job possible:

  1. Politeness, patience and helpfulness are the most important aspects of your job.  If you cannot answer a question, direct the parton to a person who can.
  2. Attendance at volunteer orientation may be required for some positions.  Your supervisor will notify you with this information.
  3. You must work a total of four (4) hours to earn one admission ticket.
  4. When you are on duty, please wear - Your 2009 volunteer T-Shirt, closed-toed shoes, clean, appropriate length shorts or clean, decent-looking pants.
  5. No smoking or drinking while on duty.
